Growing Lavender

Lavender is an extremely strong plant.  In all honesty once past the seedling stage it can produce for years to come. However, seedlings are extremely tender. As such this article focuses on growing with established plants. Look for another post dedicated to starting from seed very soon!

Growing Lavender

    • Lavender can be grown in containers, rock or in ground herb gardens.
    • Once established lavender needs very little water. Too much water or slow draining soil will kill lavender. As such, plan to add sand to any prospective areas that are clay ridden prior to planting.
    • Plant in full sun at a minimum 6 hours spacing plants 6 to 12 inches apart.
    • Lavender will grow in most any soil as long as it is well draining. Over watering or standing water will kill lavender! (Have I said be careful with water enough?)
    • Once established, leave lavender alone! Only water lavender when the soil is completely dry.
    • Feed lavender monthly with fish emulsion, and the occasional coffee grinds!

Companion planting with Lavender

The number one thing to remember when pairing lavender with other plants is water. Again, lavender likes very little water and cannot take slow draining soil. Any plant paired with lavender must have the same requirements. Several examples of plants perfect for pairing with lavender are are as follows:

  • Echinacea
  • Daisies
  • Yarrow
  • Rudbeckia
  • Rosemary
  • Oregano
  • Garlic Chives
  • Sunflowers
